DJI Avata series is a family of ducted first-person-view (FPV) quadcopters, commonly called cinewhoops, developed by DJI of China, introduced in August 2022 with the DJI Avata and continued by the Avata 2 in April 2024 and the Avata 360 in March 2026. The specifications on this page refer to the Avata 2 unless stated otherwise. The Avata 2 weighs approximately 377 g, flies for approximately 23 minutes, reaches 27 m/s (97.2 km/h) in Manual mode and has a maximum O4 transmission distance of 13 km under FCC rules.
Overview
The Avata line is DJI's compact, propeller-guarded FPV aircraft. It follows the larger DJI FPV of 2021 and applies the same goggle-and-motion-controller concept to a smaller airframe that can be flown indoors and close to people and objects. Unlike conventional FPV drones assembled from parts, the Avata is sold ready to fly and offers Normal, Sport and Manual modes with GPS positioning, altitude hold and an emergency brake.
DJI announced the original Avata on 25 August 2022 with the DJI Goggles 2 and Motion Controller. The Avata 2 followed on 11 April 2024 together with the DJI Goggles 3 and RC Motion 3, which form its control system; it is lighter, flies longer and moves to the O4 transmission system.
A third model, the Avata 360, launched on 26 March 2026 with dual 64-megapixel sensors recording 8K 360-degree video, a weight of about 455 g according to DroneDJ and O4+ transmission of up to 20 km. DJI continues to sell the Avata 2 alongside it, and this page uses the Avata 2 as the representative model.
Design and capabilities
The Avata 2 is a quadcopter with four brushless electric motors set inside an integrated propeller-guard frame. DJI lists the dimensions as 185 mm long, 212 mm wide and 64 mm high and the take-off weight as approximately 377 g. A 2150 mAh battery gives a maximum flight time of approximately 23 minutes, a maximum hovering time of approximately 21 minutes and a maximum flight distance of 13 km on one charge.
Maximum horizontal speed is 8 m/s in Normal mode, 16 m/s in Sport mode and 27 m/s (97.2 km/h) in Manual mode. Ascent and descent speeds are 6 m/s in Normal mode and 9 m/s in Sport mode. The maximum take-off altitude is 5000 m above sea level, and the aircraft is rated for winds up to 10.7 m/s.
The camera uses a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with 12 effective megapixels and a 155-degree field of view, recording 4K video at up to 100 frames per second with DJI's RockSteady and HorizonSteady electronic stabilisation.
The O4 video transmission system delivers a 1080p/100fps live feed to the goggles with latency as low as 24 ms and a maximum bitrate of 60 Mbps. The maximum transmission distance is 13 km under FCC rules and 10 km under CE, SRRC and MIC rules; the 13 km FCC figure is the range in the specs block. The DJI Goggles 3 have dual micro-OLED screens and forward-facing cameras for a real-world picture-in-picture view; the single-handed RC Motion 3 controller performs flips, rolls and drifts through its Easy ACRO function, and the optional FPV Remote Controller 3 provides two-stick control for Manual mode. DJI's United States launch price was 999 USD for the Fly More Combo with one battery.
Use cases
The Avata series is used for immersive video in confined spaces such as buildings, forests and event venues, where the propeller guards allow close passes. Typical users are content creators, real-estate videographers and hobby pilots learning FPV flight. Because it weighs more than 250 g, the aircraft must be registered in most jurisdictions.
