DJI

DJI (SZ DJI Technology Co., Ltd., 大疆创新) is a Chinese manufacturer of drones, gimbals and cameras headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The company states that it was founded in 2006; Wikipedia gives the date as 18 January 2006 and names Frank Wang (Wang Tao) as founder. DJI lists offices in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and Wikipedia reports that it held more than 90 percent of the world consumer drone market as of June 2024.

History

DJI released its first ready-to-fly quadcopter, the Phantom, in 2013. The Phantom line brought GPS-stabilised camera drones to a mass market, and the folding Mavic Pro of 2016 established the compact format that the company's consumer aircraft have followed since. DJI later added the Air, Mini, Avata and FPV consumer lines, the Inspire cinema platform, the Matrice enterprise series, Agras agricultural drones and delivery aircraft, alongside Osmo cameras, Ronin gimbals and other handheld products.

DJI's position in the United States has been shaped by regulatory action. Wikipedia records that the US Commerce Department added the company to its Entity List in December 2020, that the Department of Defense added it to a list of Chinese military companies in October 2022. On 22 December 2025 the Federal Communications Commission added foreign-made unmanned aircraft and components to its Covered List following a review required by Section 1709 of the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act; DRONELIFE reports that new models can no longer receive FCC equipment authorisation and therefore cannot be imported, marketed or sold in the United States, while drones already purchased or previously authorised are not affected. Wikipedia records that DJI filed suit against the US government over the measure in February 2026.
