Camcopter S-100

Camcopter S-100 is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) helicopter drone developed by Schiebel of Austria, introduced in the mid-2000s. It needs no runway, catapult or recovery net — only a small clear area on land or the deck of a ship — which has made it one of the most widely used naval reconnaissance UAVs in the world, with more than 540 units built for over 30 operators.

Overview

Schiebel, an Austrian company originally known for mine-detection equipment, moved into unmanned helicopter development from the mid-1990s and unveiled the Camcopter S-100 as its flagship product, displaying it at major air shows such as Paris. Its ability to operate from small ships and unprepared sites without a runway made it attractive for naval surveillance, and it has since become Schiebel's core product alongside the larger Camcopter S-300.

Design and capabilities

The S-100 is 3.1 m long with a 3.4 m main rotor diameter, a carbon-fibre and titanium airframe, and a maximum take-off weight of 200 kg, of which up to 50 kg can be mission payload. It is powered by a Schiebel-built Wankel rotary engine producing about 41 kW (55 hp), giving a cruise range of about 180 km and a top speed of around 220 km/h, with a service ceiling of about 5,500 m. Baseline endurance is around 6 hours, extendable beyond 10 hours with optional external fuel tanks. The aircraft flies via redundant fly-by-wire flight computers, navigating autonomously on pre-programmed GPS waypoints or under direct operator control, and transmits high-definition electro-optical/infrared imagery to its ground station in real time.

Operational history

The Camcopter S-100 has been tested and operated aboard naval vessels including French Navy frigates, German Navy corvettes and Royal Navy ships, and has flown intelligence-gathering missions in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Military and coast-guard operators include France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Italy, Germany, the United Arab Emirates and India, among more than 30 countries in total, alongside civilian users for maritime patrol and industrial inspection.
