Matternet is an American maker of autonomous drone delivery systems, founded in December 2011 by Andreas Raptopoulos and headquartered in Mountain View, California.

History and products

Matternet's first aircraft, the M0, was an early proof-of-concept flown in Bhutan and Papua New Guinea in 2015. The company followed it with the M1 in 2016, which it describes as the first purpose-built civilian delivery drone system, and then the M2 in 2017, designed around automated battery and payload exchange at ground infrastructure the company calls Landing Stations. Matternet has operated M2 networks with partners including UPS Flight Forward (the first FAA-certified Part 135 drone airline, carrying M2 deliveries for CVS and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist), Swiss Post in Lugano and Zurich, and healthcare and logistics operators in Germany, Japan, Abu Dhabi and elsewhere. In 2023 the M2 received an FAA Type Certificate and Production Certificate, which Matternet describes as the first a drone delivery system has been awarded. In September 2026 the company unveiled the M3, a next-generation aircraft, dock and drop-box platform aimed at restaurants, retailers, hospitals and industrial logistics operators, with launch partners including Dave's Hot Chicken in the United States and Apian's NHS drone network in the United Kingdom.
