Volocopter

Volocopter is a German developer of electric multirotor aircraft for air taxi and cargo use. Founded in 2011 by Alexander Zosel and Stephan Wolf, and previously trading as e-volo, the company is based in Bruchsal in Baden-Württemberg.

What the company builds

Volocopter flew the VC1 and VC2 technology demonstrators and the two-seat VC200 prototype, with the VC1 first flying on 21 October 2011. Its certification programme centres on the VoloCity, a two-seat multirotor eVTOL, alongside the VoloDrone cargo aircraft and VoloPort ground infrastructure. Demonstration flights have taken place in Singapore in 2019, near Rome Fiumicino in October 2022 and in New York in November 2023.

Insolvency and change of ownership

On 30 December 2024 Volocopter filed for insolvency, stating that it could not maintain the funding needed to continue operations, and remained in operation during the proceedings. On 20 March 2025 Diamond Aircraft Group Austria, a subsidiary of the Wanfeng Aircraft Division of Wanfeng Auto Holding Group, announced that it had integrated Volocopter, with the company's headquarters staying in Bruchsal. Fewer than half of the previous staff resumed work after the restructuring, and work continued on the VoloCity and its planned variants.
