Elroy Air and Robinson fly uncrewed heavy cargo missions in Louisiana

Two uncrewed aircraft moved real freight in Louisiana within days of each other, both under formal United States civil aviation oversight. Elroy Air flew its hybrid-electric Chaparral with no pilot on board at Houma–Terrebonne Airport in late August 2026 — the first uncrewed flights authorized under the Federal Aviation Administration's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). On 2 and 3 September, Robinson Unmanned landed a remotely piloted R44 AIRTRUCK on a platform configured as an offshore deck at Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia. Neither flight was a first hover; both were rehearsals of a working supply chain.
What flew, and where
The Chaparral is a hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft designed to carry more than 225 kg (500 lb) up to about 725 km (450 miles) without needing a runway or charging infrastructure. During a week-long campaign on the Gulf Coast it carried packages, medical supplies, toolboxes of spare parts, food and water containers, flying autonomously under air traffic control while working with the operator Bristow Group and the state programme LIFTOFF Louisiana. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the flights "demonstrate how these new aircraft can expand cargo delivery options to communities nationwide".
The Robinson machine takes the opposite route to the same destination. Rather than a clean-sheet airframe, the R44 AIRTRUCK is a production R44 helicopter converted for uncrewed flight with Rotor Technologies' RPX system. It carries up to 450 kg (1,000 lb) in more than 1.7 m³ (60 cubic feet) of internal volume, cruises above 185 km/h (100 knots) and operates up to 4,270 m (14,000 ft). Over two days with the Aviation Academy of Louisiana and the offshore operator PHI Aviation, it loaded and unloaded cargo, made elevated deck landings on a mock platform, held precision positions and flew repeated approaches into shared airspace — all managed by a two-person team of a remote pilot in command and one ground crew member.
Why the Gulf is the proving ground
Offshore resupply is the least glamorous and most repeatable job in rotorcraft aviation: short legs, fixed destinations, no crowds underneath, and weather that regularly grounds crewed flights. Louisiana has been supplying offshore platforms since 1947, as the Aviation Academy of Louisiana's general manager Beau Prine noted, which means the airports, mechanics and dispatch procedures already exist. That is precisely why the state was picked as one of the eight eIPP projects the Department of Transportation and the FAA announced in March 2026 across 26 states, with cargo and personnel movement over the Gulf as its stated remit.
Robinson's president and chief executive David Smith framed the conversion approach as "the Era of Both in practice, the same airframe, the same parts, and the same people" — a fleet that can fly crewed or uncrewed depending on the task. For an operator, that is a maintenance and training argument as much as a technology one.
How it fits the wider uncrewed cargo picture
Uncrewed cargo rotorcraft are not new. The directory already carries entries for the Kaman K-Max, the Schiebel Camcopter S-100 and the Skeldar V-200, all of which grew out of defence resupply and shipborne work. What changed this month is the setting: these flights happened in civil airspace, under a civil programme, alongside crewed traffic, with commercial freight in the hold. The engineering lineage runs through makers such as Kaman and Schiebel; the operating model is being written now.
The eIPP is the mechanism. It was created to generate operational data the FAA can turn into rules for advanced air mobility rather than to certify any single aircraft. In July 2026 the same programme produced a different headline when a BETA Technologies ALIA carried a transplant organ across three airports for United Therapeutics and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Cargo, medical logistics and offshore support are all being tested as separate operational concepts under one umbrella.
What happens next
- Production aircraft. Elroy Air expects its first production Chaparral before the end of 2026, built by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions at its Sacramento facility; the company puts its commercial pipeline above 1,400 aircraft.
- Operational deployment. Robinson is positioning the R44 AIRTRUCK for offshore logistics work using the existing Robinson dealer and service network rather than a new support chain.
- Rulemaking. Every eIPP flight feeds the data set the FAA will draw on for advanced air mobility regulation, which is the reason these demonstrations are documented so publicly.
