The Aerosonde UAS is a small, runway-independent tactical uncrewed aircraft system built by Textron Systems for reconnaissance, surveillance, and multi-intelligence missions.
Overview
The Aerosonde design traces back to an Australian-developed unmanned aircraft created in the 1990s for meteorological reconnaissance, including data collection over oceans and inside tropical cyclones. An early Aerosonde became the first uncrewed aircraft to cross the North Atlantic in August 1998. Aerosonde Ltd was acquired by AAI Corporation in 2006, and AAI became part of Textron following Textron's 2007 acquisition, placing the Aerosonde family under what is now Textron Systems. The platform has since been redeveloped from a meteorological sensor carrier into a militarized tactical ISR system, while retaining the Aerosonde name.
Design and capabilities
The current Aerosonde family includes conventional catapult-launched fixed-wing variants (Mk. 4.7 and Mk. 4.8) and hybrid quadrotor VTOL variants that take off and land vertically without a runway. All variants use a heavy-fuel piston engine compatible with JP-5, JP-8, F-44, Jet-A and Jet-A1 fuel, sharing logistics with other military aircraft. The Mk. 4.7 fixed-wing variant has a 4.4 m wingspan, a maximum take-off weight of about 42.2 kg, and can carry up to 14.5 kg of payload across a modular interface supporting more than 40 interchangeable sensor packages, including full-motion video, synthetic aperture radar, signals intelligence, maritime search, LiDAR and communications-relay payloads. Textron Systems states the family is designed for low visual and auditory signature and rapid assembly and launch. A newer VTOL variant, fielded under the US Army's Future Tactical Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (FTUAS) programme and assigned the designation YRQ-10A, adds runway-independent takeoff and landing.
Operational history
Textron Systems reports the Aerosonde family has accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours across desert and Arctic environments. Documented operators include the US Army — which took delivery of YRQ-10A prototype systems for the FTUAS programme in January 2025, per The Defense Post — the US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, US Special Operations Command, NASA's Airborne Science Program, and the Nigerian Army, which received Aerosonde VTOL systems in October 2022.
