ASN-206

The ASN-206 is a fixed-wing tactical reconnaissance UAV developed by China's Xi'an ASN Technology Group, used by the People's Liberation Army for battlefield surveillance, artillery spotting and electronic-warfare missions.

Overview

The ASN-206 was developed by Xi'an Aisheng Technology Group (also known as the Northwestern Polytechnical University UAV Research Institute) as a reconnaissance-focused UAV, complementing the strike-oriented ASN-205 that emerged from the same design lineage. The programme won a Chinese State Science and Technology Prize in 1996, reflecting its role as an early indigenous Chinese tactical-UAV design.

The type has since spawned an upgraded derivative, the ASN-207, with roughly double the payload and endurance, and further military variants including the communications-relay WZ-6 and the armed, four-hardpoint BZK-006.

Design and capabilities

The ASN-206 is a twin-boom, high-wing fixed-wing aircraft with a twin-tail configuration and a rear-mounted, propeller-driven engine. It is 3.8 m long with a 6 m wingspan and a maximum take-off weight of 222 kg, of which up to 50 kg can be mission payload. Wikipedia lists an endurance of 4 to 8 hours, a range of about 150 km, a top speed of 210 km/h and a service ceiling of 6,000 m. Payloads support day/night aerial reconnaissance, electronic warfare and countermeasures, and target positioning for artillery spotting.

Operational history

The ASN-206 is operated by China's People's Liberation Army for reconnaissance, border patrol, battlefield surveillance and related missions, including nuclear-radiation sampling and aerial photography roles cited by open-source references. Its upgraded ASN-207 derivative extended the family's payload and endurance considerably, and further armed and communications-relay variants (BZK-006, WZ-6) have been derived from the same basic airframe.

Variants

The related ASN-207 doubles the ASN-206's payload (to about 100 kg) and endurance (8–16 hours) and extends range to roughly 600 km. The WZ-6 is a military communications-relay variant, and the BZK-006 is an armed derivative carrying underwing munitions, alongside the unarmed reconnaissance DCK-006.
