The R44 AIRTRUCK is an uncrewed cargo variant of the Robinson R44 helicopter, converted for remotely piloted flight using Rotor Technologies' RPX flight-control system and produced by Robinson Helicopter's Robinson Unmanned business unit.

Overview

The R44 AIRTRUCK is not a clean-sheet unmanned aircraft. It starts from the Robinson R44, a four-seat, piston-powered light helicopter and, according to Robinson, the world's most-produced helicopter platform. Rather than designing a new airframe for uncrewed cargo work, Robinson and its autonomy partner Rotor Technologies remove the cockpit and flight controls and replace them with Rotor's RPX system, a fly-by-wire architecture that integrates sensors, cameras and lidar with a remote-pilot interface reproducing cyclic, collective and pedal inputs. The aircraft communicates with its remote crew over redundant radio, cellular and satellite data links.

Robinson formalized this work in March 2026 by establishing Robinson Unmanned, a business unit combining its earlier acquisition of Ascent AeroSystems with larger autonomous platforms built on Robinson's certified helicopter airframes, including the R44 AIRTRUCK, the R44 SPRAYHAWK agricultural variant, and the R66 TURBINETRUCK. Robinson president and CEO David Smith has described this strategy as the "Era of Both": crewed and uncrewed variants sharing the same airframe, the same parts, and the same production and support network.

On 2–3 September 2026, the R44 AIRTRUCK was demonstrated at Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia, Louisiana, hosted by the Aviation Academy of Louisiana (AAL), an authorized Robinson dealer and service center. The two-day event, attended by offshore operator PHI Aviation along with other industry and government observers, exercised cargo loading and unloading, an elevated deck landing on a mock offshore platform, precision positioning, and airspace-integration procedures relevant to Gulf of Mexico offshore oil-and-gas logistics.

Design and capabilities

The R44 AIRTRUCK retains the R44's Lycoming six-cylinder piston engine and its Part 27-certified airframe and dynamic components; Robinson's certification approach seeks FAA approval only for the systems that convert a piloted R44 into a remotely piloted one, leaving the underlying aircraft type certificate unchanged. Removing the cockpit, seats and manual flight controls is reported to free additional useful load for cargo. The aircraft has a maximum gross weight of 2,500 lb (1,134 kg) and can carry a useful load of up to 1,002 lb (454 kg) in more than 60 cubic feet (about 1.7 m³) of internal volume. It cruises at 109 knots (202 km/h) and operates up to a maximum altitude of 14,000 ft (4,300 m).

Robinson and Rotor Technologies operate the aircraft with a two-person remote crew: a remote pilot in command who flies via the RPX ground control interface, and a ground crew member supporting situational awareness during flight. The aircraft currently flies in the FAA Experimental category in the United States and has received commercial operating approval in Brazil and other countries.

Use cases

The R44 AIRTRUCK is positioned for civil cargo and logistics missions, with offshore oil-and-gas resupply as its lead application. The Louisiana demonstration specifically tested deck landings and cargo handling scenarios representative of offshore platform servicing. Rotor Technologies also lists agriculture, aerial work, inspection, firefighting support and other cargo-transport missions among the RPX system's target applications, alongside the related R44 SPRAYHAWK agricultural-spray conversion.
