The MQ-4C Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance maritime-surveillance UAV built by Northrop Grumman, developed from the RQ-4 Global Hawk airframe for the US Navy's Broad Area Maritime Surveillance mission, and first flown on 22 May 2013.
Overview
Triton was designed to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance over vast ocean and coastal areas, complementing manned maritime-patrol aircraft such as the P-8A Poseidon. It reuses the Global Hawk's basic airframe and autonomous flight-control approach but adds a reinforced structure, wing de-icing and lightning protection so it can descend through maritime weather to get a closer look at ships and other surface contacts, something the higher-flying Global Hawk was not built to do.
The aircraft made its first flight from US Air Force Plant 42/Palmdale Regional Airport on 22 May 2013, reaching 20,000 ft on a roughly 80-minute sortie. Flight testing later expanded to altitudes near 60,000 ft, and the programme conducted an 11-hour cross-country ferry flight from Palmdale to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.
Design and capabilities
Triton is 14.5 m long with a wingspan of 39.9 m and a maximum take-off weight of about 14,630 kg. Northrop Grumman lists an internal payload capacity of 1,452 kg plus 1,089 kg of external payload, carried on an AN/ZPY-3 Multi-Function Active Sensor AESA radar, a Raytheon MTS-B electro-optical/infrared turret, electronic support measures for signals intelligence, and an Automatic Identification System receiver for tracking shipping. A single Rolls-Royce AE 3007 turbofan gives it a top speed of about 575 km/h, a service ceiling around 17,000 m, an endurance of roughly 30 hours and a range of about 15,200 km.
Operational history
The US Navy declared initial operational capability for Triton in 2023, operating it from squadrons VUP-19 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida, and VUP-11 at Whidbey Island, Washington; VUP-19 first deployed the type to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, in January 2020. The Navy has 30 of a planned 68 aircraft delivered. Australia's Royal Australian Air Force also operates the type through No. 9 Squadron, with its first Triton arriving in June 2024 out of four ordered. In April 2026, the US Navy lost an MQ-4C Triton in a Class A mishap during operations in the Middle East, with the airframe valued at about $240 million.
