Wingcopter launches the 262, a six-hour electric reconnaissance VTOL

Wingcopter, the German manufacturer known for medical-delivery drones, launched a tactical reconnaissance aircraft called the Wingcopter 262 on 14 September 2026. The all-electric tilt-rotor takes off and lands vertically, weighs 10 kg (22 lb) at maximum take-off, and is quoted at a 150 km (93 mi) tactical range with up to six hours of flight time. It is the first product of Wingcopter Security & Defence, a business unit the company created earlier in 2026, and it was introduced at a defence event in Düsseldorf.
What the 262 is
The name is the wingspan: 262 centimetres (8.6 ft). The aircraft uses the patented tilt-rotor architecture Wingcopter developed for its delivery aircraft — rotors that point upward for vertical take-off and then rotate forward so the wing carries the aircraft in cruise. That combination is what allows a fixed-wing endurance figure without a runway, a catapult or a net.

The payload is a modular gimbal. DroneXL lists stabilised electro-optical and infrared cameras with 360-degree coverage, zoom options up to 80x, thermal imaging and AI-assisted detection of vehicles, people and movement. The aircraft has retractable landing gear and quick-swap battery modules, which is a turnaround argument rather than a performance one: the point is to get the same airframe back up without waiting for a charge cycle.
Wingcopter says the 262 keeps working where satellite navigation does not. DroneXL describes the approach as jamming-resistant satellite reception combined with beacon-based and visual positioning; the company's own wording is that the positioning technology has been "proven under real-world operational conditions in Ukraine". One operator can assemble the aircraft without special tools and have it ready to fly in minutes, with no launch equipment.
A delivery company adds a defence line
Wingcopter spent its first decade on logistics. Its current delivery aircraft, the Wingcopter 198, is a sub-25 kg platform used for medical and inter-site cargo runs, and the company has flown vaccine and blood deliveries in programmes across Africa, the Pacific and Europe. DRONELIFE puts the company at more than 150 employees and over €120 million raised from European and international investors.
The 262 is therefore less a new aircraft type than an existing airframe philosophy pointed at a different customer. The sequence is visible in the company's own announcements: in February 2026 Wingcopter and TAF Industries, Ukraine's largest UAV producer, signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint venture producing Ukrainian reconnaissance drones in Germany. Both companies framed it as diversifying industrial risk — moving manufacturing capacity out of a country where factories are themselves targets. The Wingcopter 262 announcement states that the same cooperation covers making the 262 available to Ukraine.
European manufacturers moving from civil work into security and defence lines is not unusual in this size class. Several makers already in the directory sit on both sides of it — C-Astral in Slovenia builds survey aircraft and the military Bramor C4EYE from related airframes, and AeroVironment built its small-UAS business on exactly this pattern.
Where it sits among small reconnaissance aircraft
The 262 lands in the mini-UAV class: aircraft light enough for one or two people to carry, flown by a small team, endurance measured in hours rather than days. The established names in that band are hand-launched or catapult-launched fixed wings such as AeroVironment's Puma 3 AE and Insitu's ScanEagle, which need either a clear launch run or ground equipment and, in ScanEagle's case, a net or skyhook to recover.
The closer comparison is the VTOL fixed-wing group, where an aircraft takes off vertically and then flies on the wing — the Penguin C VTOL is the directory's example. What Wingcopter is claiming is a better endurance-to-weight trade inside that group: six hours from a 10 kg all-electric airframe, where comparable endurance in this class has usually meant a combustion engine and the fuel, heat signature and maintenance that come with it.
What is not settled yet
No price, delivery timeline or launch customer was announced. The six-hour figure is the manufacturer's, and DroneXL notes it has not been independently verified or demonstrated with a full sensor payload fitted — gimbals, data links and processing all draw power, and endurance quoted for a clean airframe is not endurance on a mission. Range and endurance figures for this class are also normally quoted under benign conditions; wind and temperature move them substantially.
For readers tracking the small-UAS market, the durable part of this announcement is not the specification sheet. It is that a company built on humanitarian delivery has formed a defence unit, tied it to Ukrainian production capacity, and shipped a product against it inside a year.
