nEUROn

nEUROn is a stealthy, experimental unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstrator led by the French company Dassault Aviation, first flown on 1 December 2012. It is a multinational European programme, developed under the authority of the French defence procurement agency DGA with five partner nations, to prove that Europe could design and build a low-observable, autonomous strike aircraft.

Overview

Dassault Aviation is prime contractor and holds about half of the development work, with Alenia Aeronautica of Italy (25%, weapons systems), Saab of Sweden (25%, design and avionics), EADS CASA of Spain (wing and ground control), the Hellenic Aerospace Industry of Greece (rear fuselage) and Switzerland's RUAG (wind-tunnel testing) as principal partners; Thales supplies the datalink systems. The programme, valued at about €405 million, was designed to give European industry hands-on experience with high-end UCAV technologies — stealth shaping, autonomous flight control, internal weapons carriage and integration with a wider command-and-control network — that no single European nation could easily develop alone.

Design and capabilities

nEUROn is a tailless flying-wing aircraft about 9.5 m long with a 12.5 m wingspan, powered by a single Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour turbofan producing about 40 kN of thrust. It has a maximum speed of about 980 km/h (roughly Mach 0.8) and a service ceiling of 14,000 m. Its airframe and internal weapons bay, capable of carrying guided bombs such as two 230 kg GBU-type munitions, were shaped to reduce radar cross-section, and the aircraft is designed to fly a pre-planned mission autonomously while remaining under human oversight.

Operational history

Following its December 2012 first flight in France, nEUROn completed a first round of French flight trials by March 2015, sensor trials in Italy through August 2015, and live-fire weapons testing in Sweden. In 2016 it flew stealth-signature trials alongside the French carrier Charles de Gaulle's battle group, and from 2019 it has continued expanded test scenarios from Istres Air Base in France. The aircraft remains a demonstrator rather than an operational type; in 2024 France allocated further funding toward developing a production-representative UCAV drawing on nEUROn's technology, with an estimated unit cost of around €25 million for such a derivative.
